I do both studio and plein air paintings in oil. The studio paintings are generally more detailed and larger than the plein air works. I studied 17th century Italian painting at the St. Louis Art Museum and my more complex works are constructed in the 17th century tradition. By doing a drawing first, I can add a monochromatic under painting to establish “values.” Then many layers of semi transparent color are added until finished. This results in the finished painting being more luminous than the “wet in wet” techniques that are characteristic of more contemporary work.
